Cogs in the Machine, A Symbol of Family and Community

Tami Schwerin

The Plant originated from a cold war aluminum industrial smelting plant in the 1980's.  In the 1940's it was one of the largest flower farms on the east coast.  When Tami and Lyle bought the property in 2005, it was nicknamed "The Plant" and was called an eco-industrial plant. The space was re-developed to become a quirky biodiesel plant, farm and sustainability focused business campus. It has been hard to describe this place in it's evolution. There is not a good elevator speech. Seems to depend on which door you came in through. Was it the biodiesel door, maybe it was the non-profit Abundance NC or perhaps the organic food distribution company, ECO?

The Town of Pittsboro required that the road get renamed. It was decided that we would be saving the trees in our part of town and therefore the road should be named Lorax Lane. And so it is.

The property and spirit of The Plant has attracted many businesses and projects, as well as interesting people. Really, really good work has happened at The Plant and spawned all sorts of beauty and commerce in the world.

In 2019, we decided to really manifest the food, beverage, music, activities, and gathering space that was happening. Tami went to work on creating a logo because so many people were confused about what the space was or even the name of it. After a few graphic iterations, she came up with the cogs tipping our hat to the bizarre space that we inhabited. Green to symbolize our environmental lens and the two big cogs with the little cog is Mom, Dad and son.

The three cogs represent Lyle, Arlo and Tami. Our family unit is bigger but these three are the core that run The Plant.

Arlo threw his hat into The Plant after he graduated from Wilson College of Textiles - NCSU focusing on Hempsmith Clothing Company. This brand was started by his brother in high school and Arlo has been innovating ever since in his boutique atelier located next to Fair Game Beverage Company at The Plant.

We do know it's been a very wild ride the past 20 years and we are grateful to steward this land to be able to provide community gatherings, local economy from small businesses, soulful events, important artistic expression and a welcoming of all walks of life. Not to mention great food and drink to boot!

Let's see what the next 20 years brings.

It will be magic.
